Sometimes a small-slow-hum is what you need. Other times you may find that you need a deeper release, a more robust and rushhhing exhale of breath.
The sound /shhh/ is not only for babies. To hear it, and especially to form the sound and feel it emerge from within you, is a generous somatic practice for calming your nervous system when you feel stressed, overwhelmed, or distracted.
Try this:
Say shhh for the full stretch of its sound as you exhale
Pause at the bottom of your breath
Take another long deep breath in
And let another shhh fall out of you
Stay with this slow, sustained lullaby loop of in-shhh, in-shhh until you feel yourself settled back into the home of you.
